We ❤ Architecture: Valentine’s Fun

Posted on February 03, 2015

In our books, the ultimate date is a CAF River Cruise (of course). But since we aren’t on the water for Valentine’s Day, we’ve rounded up a handsome collection of architecture-themed Valentine’s dates to enjoy with your special someone. Let your true architecture geek shine through on these memorable dates (and admit it…there is a little bit of architecture geek in all of us).

Love is in the Air: A Valentine’s Day Jazz Concert
The Richard H. Driehaus Museum, 40 E. Erie Street
If you haven’t been to the gorgeous Driehaus Museum yet, you are doing yourself a disservice. A former mansion belonging to one of Chicago’s elite, Samuel M. Nickerson, the inside and out is an opulent display of America’s Gilded Age, complete with a dramatic glass dome, embossed walls and ornate details that will leave you breathless at every room. Experience this meticulously restored home with your favorite loved one while being serenaded with jazzy love songs as you sip cocktails in the Museum’s historic ballroom.
Date: Saturday, February 14, 2015
Time: 6:30pm and 8:30pm
Cost: $45 (non-members); $40 (members)

Valentine's Day Dinner Celebration
Terzo Piano at The Art Institute, 159 E. Monroe Street
Dinner with gorgeous views at the world’s #1 museum, in its Modern Wing designed by one of the foremost museum architects of our time? But of course. Delight your loved one with a special three-course dinner, live music and romantic views of the city. Come early to enjoy the museum (additional charge).
Date: Saturday, February 14, 2015
Time: 5:00pm – 9:00pm
Cost: $85

LEGO Build
ArcelorMittal Design Studio @ CAF, 224 S. Michigan Avenue
In our opinion, you’re never too old to play with LEGOs. Build LEGOs to your heart’s (and your sweetheart’s) content with other LEGO-loving big kids at the Chicago Architecture Foundation’s LEGO Build. Led by a designer, these casual weekly builds are open to all ages and feature a monthly theme to spark building ideas.
Date: Sunday, February 15, 2015
Time: 1pm and 3pm (90 minutes)
Cost: $10 (non-members); $5 (members)

Why not make your own architecture photo fun? Use our map highlighting key buildings along the Chicago River and take fun selfies with your Valentine posing amongst these amazing architectural giants and then post to Instagram to declare your architectural love. Pull up google to learn the incredible stories behind each building. After your DIY photo tour, warm up with dinner or a cocktail at an architecturally significant spot such as Travelle in the Langham or Sixteen in the Trump, or grab a cocktail, coffee, or nutella croissant at 360 CHICAGO in the John Hancock Building to get a sky-high view of all the buildings you just saw.
