Frank Lloyd Wright Explained at the Art Institute

The Art Institute of Chicago will host a lecture titled “Frank Lloyd Wright, the Art Institute, and Robie House 1900–1910” on April 5. The lecture by Kathryn Smith will explore work Wright presented with the Chicago Architectural Club at the Art Institute during his time in Chicago, and discuss his design philosophy and how he won over skeptics. Smith is an architectural historian and preservationist based in Los Angeles, and the author of the recent book Wright on Exhibit. The event will be put on in partnership with the AIC and Frank Lloyd Wright Trust, and registration includes admission to the Art Institute.

Textiles Visionary Award Winners Announced

Christina Cho Yoo and Ming Thompson of Atelier Cho Thompson won the IIDA's Anna Hernandez/Luna Textiles Visionary Award, which recognizes contributions to the design industry made by female business owners. "Every day, empowered women are driving the design industry and changing the way we approach the profession,” said Cheryl S. Durst, IIDA executive vice president and CEO, in a statement. Yoo and Thompson, whose San Francisco– and New Haven–based firm focuses on architecture, interiors, furniture, installations, and exhibits, will receive $5,000. Karin Liljegren of Omgivning received an honorable mention. Recipients will be honored at the IIDA Annual Meeting on Sunday, June 9.

Kimpton Hotel Monaco Gets Redesign from Gettys Group

The Kimpton Hotel Monaco Chicago and local firm the Gettys Group are set to unveil a renovated design. The new concept is meant to channel Chicago’s culture and draw on the impact of nearby waters, mainly the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. It includes a multifunctional lobby with coworking spaces, patios, and meeting areas. Corridors and rooms will feature menswear-inspired details along with high ceilings and large bay windows.

Chicago Architecture Tours Unveils 2019 Schedule

Chicago Architecture Center announced its 2019 river cruise schedule. Daily departures on Chicago’s First Lady Cruises began March 30. The 90-minute tour, which is consistently ranked as one of the top attractions in Chicago for both locals and tourists, takes guests across all three branches of the Chicago river while an architectural historian gives details on the history and design of the buildings that make up the city’s skyline. Landmarked House Finally Finds Buyer

After years on the market, the historic Wallace C. Abbott House, dubbed the Queen Anne, has finally found a buyer. The landmark home in Ravenswood sold for $1.75 million, about half the asking price. Architects Rudolph Dahlgren and Oscar Livendahl built the home in 1891 for Dr. Wallace C. Abbott, who founded what eventually became Abbott Laboratories. The 7,000-square-foot Victorian manor has five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a kitchen, a wraparound porch, a two-bedroom coach house, and a garage.
